This is a piece from the Spartacus ballet, where Spartacus and Phrygia perform a pas de deux, unaware it marks their final encounter. The composition is remarkably beautiful and passionate, the way it is able to convey love, wistfulness, and sorrow simultaneously. It's truly breathtaking. To me, it's a sunrise in musical form. Just that first minute sounds like the little songbirds you hear at dawn, and then it gradually escalates into a spectacular view of colors and sunlight.
Dvorak composed this during his time as the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America. It is incredibly soothing and sweet, like a lullaby. I always think of the countryside in the spring, when I drove out to the middle of nowhere a few years ago. The rolling hills, the blooming wildflowers, the peaceful presence of grazing cows, and the weathered remnants of old schoolhouses and churches from the mid-late 1800s. It was a serene and humble landscape, filled with a quiet charm.
Another piece that makes me romanticize whatever I am doing. It sounds like a confession of love that just cannot be held in anymore. The way the piano trickles and pours out like a waterfall is one of my favorite details; it is so full of emotion and depth.
The first time I heard this piece was at the local symphony with my mom, and I was absolutely mesmerized. It's divided into two distinct moods: the initial half carries an eerie and magical atmosphere, seamlessly transitioning into a breathtaking waltz. What truly captivates me is the harp - it has always been a favorite of mine. I honestly think a complete beginner could pick one up and it would still sound angelic.
Oh my soul - this is what makes me wish I was in love. It is so heartfelt, so pure. I have listened to this composition hundreds of times, but every time I put it on it's like hearing it for the first time again. It's beautiful, aching, misty. It's like stepping into the world of Romeo and Juliet.
