What Has This Year Taught You?

Writer's picture: KatieKatie

This year has certainly been surreal which is probably an understatement for some people, but for me, I was able to take away something much bigger than my current situation: I found a completely different way of looking at life. During my time at home, I was able to work more on myself and rediscover the things that I value. Because of everything that happened, I stopped taking peoples' presence for granted and I starting treasuring every little interaction that I had with people. This ranged from the ones that I knew my whole life to complete strangers. I rekindled lost friendships, did my best to make amends with those that I was not the nicest to in the past, and completely embraced the people in my life that showed me the purest form of love and appreciation. I think that being alone has such value because of how it forces you to think about what you truly love, what you should put more of your time and energy into, and it makes you really consider what you want in and from your life. Many people shy away from being alone with their thoughts, but I think because of this year, it has allowed people to reevaluate themselves and their relationship with the things and people around them.

A few months into quarantine, I stumbled upon a quote that read, "Everything happens for you, not to you," and this was that moment that really opened my eyes. I am a firm believer in the fact that the bad experiences are more valuable than the good ones because of how much more they teach you. No matter where you are in your life, you can always refer back to your less pleasant life experiences to help you make your decisions and grow from them and I think that is why this year has been so essential to us. Whether you believe this happened to us on purpose or not, there is one thing that is true about this year and that is that it has taught us not to take our situations for granted. I hope you all are so proud of yourselves for coming this far this year and I hope that this next one is all you have ever wished for. Thank you for being such a big part of my happiness this year and I hope looking back on this year, you can choose to remember it as a time of growth and learning too.
